I wrote this article especially for those of you who didn’t bother to read “Preparing yourself for J’ouvert”; then got home and realized that your hair is filled with paint, there’s mud under your fingernails, your skin has soaked up the black oil pretty good and on top of all that you have a sunburn that makes you just want to be put out of your misery.
If you get home from the J’ouvert celebrations with your skin covered in thick black oil, all you need to remove this is a cup of sugar. Now you may need more or less depending on how covered you are and your size. Go under the shower and wet yourself, next take the sugar and rub it on your skin, it creates a natural scrub that works well to get rid of the oil as it goes deep into the skin cleaning it of impurities. This is an all natural scrub so those of you (like myself) with sensitive skin can use this, no problem.
Most J’ouvert bands use oil based paints. To remove oil based paint from your hair is a little more tricky. The way to remove oil based paints is to use some type of oil to get it out. You can use paint thinners however, this is very strong and can dry out and even damage your hair, and not to mention the smell it will leave behind. Using olive oil, baby oil or even regular vegetable oil will safely get oil based paint out of your hair. Cover your hair strands with olive oil and wrap your hair in a plastic cap. Let it sit in your hair for a few hours as it loosens the paint. Remove the plastic cap and use a fine-toothed comb to comb through, getting the paint out of your hair. Shampoo your hair afterwards with your regular shampoo.
If you have no special attachment to your fingernails you can just give them a short cut. This will help greatly in the cleaning process. However, if you wear your nails long, you will have to clean them out. You can begin by soaking your finger nails in a bowl of soapy water for about 5 minutes. This will loosen up the mud making it easier to remove, you can also try cutting a lemon in half and sticking your fingernails into them for the same 5 minutes. Next take a nail brush, (you can purchase this at any cosmetic store or pharmacy) and scrub really hard until all the mud is out.
Sunburn is horrible and the more severe they are the more they hurt. Here’s how you can cure them naturally. Use white household vinegar. This can be used in two ways; either soak a towel in the vinegar and wipe the affected areas. Or take a bath with vinegar in it by filling your bathtub with cool water, then adding 2 to 3 cups of vinegar. Get in and soak, this method works best when a large portion of your body is covered in sunburns.
